The “Have Your Cake and Crochet It Too” Triangle Scarf

As the end of September quickly approaches, many of us are starting to feel that cool chill in the air! Well – Unless you’re like me and live in North Carolina where it’s still in the 90’s. But soon, fall weather will be here too!

I designed this pattern in January of 2018 and it’s much different than my other amigurumi patterns I typically design! It also eventually inspired the Awesome Pawsesome Puppy Bandanna that’s also available for FREE on my blog!

How cute would a matching set be?

The “Have Your Cake and Crochet It Too” Triangle Scarf is a piece of cake and a great way to use all those pretty Caron Cakes or other self-striping yarns you’ve been collecting! This pattern is quick, simple and uses just one Caron Cake, making it the perfect weekend recipe….without the mess or calories!

Ingredients:

• I/9 (5.5mm) Crochet Hook

• 1 Skein of Ca ron Cake Yarn or at least 383 yards of medium Worsted Weight Yarn

The more yarn, the bigger the scarf!

• Scissors

• Yarn Needle

Key

ch: Chain

st: Stitch

Sl St: Slip Stitch

dc: Double Crochet

Finished Size:

Approximate dimensions when using one skein of Caron Cakes Yarn: 41 inches from tassel to tassel, 22 inches from starting chain to bottom “point.”

Gauge 3 Rows = 4 inches across, 2.75 inches from starting ch to “point.”

Pattern Notes:

• It is crucial to check your gauge when using Caron Cakes since you’ll use the entire skein.

• This pattern is ﬂexible and can be adjusted to ﬁt your preferred scarf size by using two cakes or by substituting for another medium, worsted weighted yarn with more yardage.

•This pattern is similar to a granny square and uses clusters of 3 double crochets.

• Crochet the “CH 3” at the beginning of each round loosely. This ch is equal to a dc.

• Make sure you have plenty of yarn left for making your tassels.

Caron Cakes

This pattern features Caron Cakes in “Rainbow Sprinkles.”

Caron Cakes is a self-striping, medium, worsted weight yarn and is 80% acrylic, 20% wool. One skein Contains 383 Yards.

You can create your own “cakes” by using any assortment of acrylic yarn.

Pattern

Row 1: Ch 3. Inside the furthest ch from hook: [dc 2, ch 2, dc 3].
Now, you should have 2 dc clusters with your ch 2 space forming a “point” in the middle (see pink arrow). Pull Sl St tight to close hole.

Row 2: Ch 3 loosely, turn work.

Dc 2 into the last st from previous row (see green arrow). Ch 2. [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] into the “point” ( ch 2 space) from previous row (see red arrow).

Ch 2, 3 dc into space created by the ch 3 from previous row (see blue arrow).

After row 2, you will have 4 dc clusters with a ch 2 in between as your “point.”

Row 3: Ch 3 loosely, turn work. Dc 2 into the st from previous row.
Ch 2, dc 3 into ch 2 space from previous row.
Ch 2. [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] into the”point” (see pink arrow).
Ch 2, 3 dc into the ch 2 space from the previous row.
Ch 2, 3 dc into ch 3 space from previous row (see blue arrow).

After row 3, you will have 6 dc clusters with a ch 2 in between as your “point.”

Continuing:
Rows 4-28 (or desired length): Continue like row 3, working in the previous row’s ch 2 spaces and working [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] into the “point” stitch.
You will quickly see your triangle take shape!

Helpful Tips:
• When using 1 skein of Caron Cakes, I worked 28 total rows.
• You may notice that your scarf shape will curve a bit as you continue.
This is normal!
• Be sure to check your gauge if using Caron Cakes!
• For reference, my scarf measured 17 inches across (pink)and 10 inches from the point to the top (green) by row 12.

The Last Row :
Whenever you complete your last row, Sl St into the last st to tie off.
Make sure you have plenty of yarn left for making your tassels.

Decorating with Tassels!
I created two, 3.5 inch long tassels, but you can make your tassels as long as you wish!

Cut 4 yarn pieces measuring around 5-6 inches long, set aside.
Using the remaining yarn, hold an end with your thumb and little finger and begin wrapping around your fingers.
The more space between your fingers, the longer your tassels will be.
You can wrap as many times as you wish, I wrapped a total of 30 times.
When finished wrapping, cut the yarn.
Take one of the small yarn pieces from step 1 and thread it through
the middle of the loops. Tie a double knot at the top.
Using two fingers, pinch the loops together approximately 1/3 of the
way down from the knot. Tie a second yarn piece here.
Cut the loops free at the bottom of your tassel and trim the ends so they are even.
After trimming the tassels, attach them to the scarf with a secure knot.
