As the end of September quickly approaches, many of us are starting to feel that cool chill in the air! Well – Unless you’re like me and live in North Carolina where it’s still in the 90’s. But soon, fall weather will be here too!

I designed this pattern in January of 2018 and it’s much different than my other amigurumi patterns I typically design! It also eventually inspired the Awesome Pawsesome Puppy Bandanna that’s also available for FREE on my blog!

How cute would a matching set be?

The “Have Your Cake and Crochet It Too” Triangle Scarf is a piece of cake and a great way to use all those pretty Caron Cakes or other self-striping yarns you’ve been collecting! This pattern is quick, simple and uses just one Caron Cake, making it the perfect weekend recipe….without the mess or calories!

If you prefer to view this pattern as a PDF, I have that version available through my Etsy shop for just $1.25. Click HERE!

Ingredients:

• I/9 (5.5mm) Crochet Hook

• 1 Skein of Caron Cake Yarn or at least 383 yards of medium Worsted Weight Yarn

The more yarn, the bigger the scarf!

Scissors

• Yarn Needle

Key

ch: Chain

st: Stitch

Sl St: Slip Stitch

dc: Double Crochet

Finished Size:

Approximate dimensions when using one skein of Caron Cakes Yarn: 41 inches from tassel to tassel, 22 inches from starting chain to bottom “point.”

Pattern Notes:

• It is crucial to check your gauge when using Caron Cakes since you’ll use the entire skein.

• This pattern is flexible and can be adjusted to fit your preferred scarf size by using two cakes or by substituting for another medium, worsted weighted yarn with more yardage.

•This pattern is similar to a granny square and uses clusters of 3 double crochets.

• Crochet the “CH 3” at the beginning of each round loosely. This ch is equal to a dc.

• Make sure you have plenty of yarn left for making your tassels.

Ch 2, 3 dc into ch 3 space from previous row (see blue arrow).

After row 3, you will have 6 dc clusters with a ch 2 in between as your “point.”

Continuing:
Rows 4-28 (or desired length): Continue like row 3, working in the previous row’s ch 2 spaces and working [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3] into the “point” stitch.
You will quickly see your triangle take shape!

Helpful Tips:
• When using 1 skein of Caron Cakes, I worked 28 total rows.
• You may notice that your scarf shape will curve a bit as you continue.
This is normal!
• Be sure to check your gauge if using Caron Cakes!
• For reference, my scarf measured 17 inches across (pink)and 10 inches from the point to the top (green) by row 12.

The Last Row :
Whenever you complete your last row, Sl St into the last st to tie off.
Make sure you have plenty of yarn left for making your tassels.

Decorating with Tassels!
I created two, 3.5 inch long tassels, but you can make your tassels as long as you wish!

  1. Cut 4 yarn pieces measuring around 5-6 inches long, set aside.
  2. Using the remaining yarn, hold an end with your thumb and little finger and begin wrapping around your fingers.
The more space between your fingers, the longer your tassels will be.
  3. You can wrap as many times as you wish, I wrapped a total of 30 times.
When finished wrapping, cut the yarn.
  4. Take one of the small yarn pieces from step 1 and thread it through
the middle of the loops. Tie a double knot at the top.
  5. Using two fingers, pinch the loops together approximately 1/3 of the
way down from the knot. Tie a second yarn piece here.
  6. Cut the loops free at the bottom of your tassel and trim the ends so they are even.
  7. After trimming the tassels, attach them to the scarf with a secure knot.

Weave the loose ends back into the tassel (see black arrow), pulling them out through the middle.

Weave in all loose ends anddd…
You’re All Done!

Cringeworthy Customer Experiences As Told By Makers

Fall is one of the busiest times of year for us makers! With the approaching holiday season, September through December is the time where we have the most interactions with our customers.

For me, these interactions happen mostly in person at my fall and winter markets. I love selling in person and meeting new people! There are so many who appreciate what we do as crocheters and knitters and it’s so nice to receive compliments .

But, if you’ve ever sold your handmade goods, then you’ve probably had at least one super difficult customer that really made you consider why you were doing this.

Since it’s the season of markets, I recently asked for your personal customer stories on Instagram and you all came through! I’m both amused and horrified by these and hope that we can all read these together to laugh, roll our eyes, and give each other sympathies.

I’ll start with my favorite customer story!

I had a customer who was interested in my owls. She immediately asked for a discount, calling them the “fat ass owls.” I said that I do not give discounts and she eventually leaves.

Hours later, she is back. She picks up my display sign that I purchased at Michael’s that has my owl pricing on it. She turns it around and sees the Michael’s price tag with the bar code and proceeds to tell me that the price for the owls is THIS tag. Not the written “Owls $X” written in chalk on the front side of the sign but, the sticker tag on the back of it.

Excuse me, what?

I resisted my urge to be snarky and hoped she would just leave again.

But, the “fat ass owl” she has originally wanted was now sold and she wanted a custom order. This was one of my early markets and I did hesitate but decided to give her my information anyway.

To my surprise, she actually reached out to me on Etsy asking me to call her. So, I did.

And, she was the most pleasant person and we chatted for about 30 minutes about random things. She paid for 3 custom owls in the color she had wanted and agreed to the price and shipping costs. No grumbling about it!

This was one instance that proves that the expression “kill them with kindness” is true. I couldn’t believe that this was the same person.

Now, it’s time for your stories!

Thanks for sharing! Remember to smile and nod this market season and keep some cookies handy to eat when you’ve having a hard time keeping your mouth shut.

10 Patterns Perfect for Handmade Craft Markets!

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s officially August and summer is quickly winding down. If you’re like me, you’re probably finalizing your fall and winter market schedule and are cranking out that inventory!

I personally get a lot of enjoyment from selling crochet in person. It gives me the opportunity to put a face to my name and meet new people! This will be my fourth year participating in craft markets and I’m excited to setup at some I have experience with as well as a few new ones!

I get asked often what my best sellers are for markets are! And the truth is, with every market, the answer is always different. Plus, every year I add new items to my inventory!

Any time I see a fellow maker release a new pattern or when I discover one of their older ones, I naturally start to evaluate how well the item may sell in a market setting. If I think it could do well for my target market, I save the pattern for later!

I always consider certain criteria with patterns including quickness, difficulty, yarn usage and profit margin.

I’ve created a list of 10 patterns that I believe are perfect market items!

1. Crafty Loop Earrings by @acraftyconcept.

Earrings are becoming a new trend in our crochet community and this pattern by Ashley of A Crafty Concept doesn’t disappoint! She really nailed “boho chic.”

Her Crafty Loop Earrings are quick, easy and unique – all key attributes to a pattern perfect for markets.

The profit margin for these are high since the materials are inexpensive and take very little time! Plus, the pattern is available for FREE on her blog!

Her blog post also includes printable packaging from The Knotty Boss! Win!

2. The Knotted Mop / Dust Cover by @myhookupz

One of my favorite stitches is the bobble stitch! So, anytime I find a pattern with a bobble, i’m a happy crocheter!

These mop / duster covers are the perfect creation for the eco-friendly customer. I hate having to buy the refills for my Swiffer and this is the perfect alternative. Plus, the bobble stitch is the perfect texture for scrubbing flooring!

This is another quick and simple pattern that is a great yarn buster! You can easily bring your own mop / duster with you to your festival to use as a display.

4. The Morning Hustle Cozy by @cozymoondesigns

This pattern by Cozy Moon Designs is one of my favorite drink holder patterns! It is simple, with great stitching and texture!

Anything reusable is trendy right now especially when it can be used for hot or cold drinks!

These can be easily stashed in your desk drawer, car, or purse to make it easily accessible. They would also be great as gifts since everyone loves a good ‘to-go’ beverage!

Be sure to include a display at your market to show how these can be best used for drinks!

Click HERE for the Morning Hustle Cozy.

5. The Mug Hugger Coffee Cozy by @thejonesyco

Similar to the drink holder, mug wraps huggers are also fun!

I specifically love this pattern because of the bow! The bow makes it easy to adjust the hugger to any mug size. They could also be used for larger to-go cups when needed.

Customers will love picking out their favorite colors! You can also sell these as sets with hot chocolate or tea wrapped up with a bow for the perfect Christmas gift!

6. The MerMazing Mug Rug by @angelbunny_creations

There are several cute mug rugs out there but this one is sure to stand out at your markets! This beautiful MerMazing Mug Rug is unique and great for all ages.

This pattern is also a quick make and perfect for yarn busting. You could easily make several of these while just sitting at your festival!

7. Crochet Plant Hanger by @februaryskydesigns

Looking for home decor to add to your inventory? This crochet plant hanger by February Sky Designs is perfect!

I’m a huge fan of adding green to my home, so these stood out to me immediately! I love that they use wooden rings and beads to really add a natural, boho feel to these hangers.

The design is simple to make but looks very detailed and will be sure to impress customers!

These would easily hang on the tent at your market to free up table space for other items. Include faux plants or use them as a display to help increase your sales!

8. F-BOMB by The Crocheting Mom

Not going to lie, I laughed to myself a lot when I first saw these. Clever and unique, this pattern is perfect for markets with a lot of adults as your audience. But, children won’t understand why their parents are quietly giggling at something with a simple letter on it.

Customers will love the subtle humor of these F – Bombs and will instantly think of the perfect person they know who could also use a laugh.

Perfect “joke” gifts for just about anyone with a sense of humor.

9. Egg Shaped Cat by Lilleliis

Amigurumi is always a hit at my markets! Most people have never seen this style of crochet before!

I like to keep amigurumi inventory simple so I can make several of each pattern!

This cute egg shaped kitten is a quick make perfect for markets! You can even add a rattle to the inside or add a collar with a bell for extra fun!

Plus, the color combinations are endless! I love the blue, pinks and yellow above!

Click HERE for the Egg Shaped Cat Pattern!

10. Bella the Baby Owl by @thecraftyfoxcrochet

Last, my personal favorite pattern for markets is one of my own. The Bella the Baby Owl Pattern features two sizes of owls. I have been making these for many years and are always my best seller.

I love the simplicity of this pattern and the ability to make it with a variety of colors and types of yarn. They fit perfectly in children’s hands and are super squishy!

You can also market these as stress balls (I often have people ask me if that’s what they are).

Click HERE for the Bella the Baby Owl Pattern!

I hope you have enjoyed this list and find it useful!

Keep in mind that each market is unique and has a different audience. What is a popular item at one, may not be a hit at the next. Be sure to make what makes YOU happy and your customers will notice!

10 Yarn Color Palettes Inspired by Frozen Treats

Anyone who knows me can tell you that I am NOT a summer person whatsoever. The heat, humidity, bugs and never ending sweat droplets really make me grumpy!

I like to say that I dislike summer because I grew up in North Carolina with no air conditioning. Spending most of the summer underneath a fan as a child made me very appreciative of the cool air coming from the ceiling when I became an adult and had my own place with A/C.

The good news is — I have a remedy for my unhappiness during the summer months. I’m obsessed with anything FROZEN. Ice cream, slushies, popsicles — give them all to me! I’d say frozen treats are the only thing getting me through July and August each year.

I love using color palettes to find new color combinations that I typically wouldn’t think of! I’m always looking for color palettes that reflect the seasons and what better way to get some inspo for summer than ICE CREAM?

I’ve created 10 color palettes featuring Hobby Lobby’s “I Love this Yarn.” It’s my favorite 100% acrylic yarn and I’ve been using it for many years. It has never lets me down!

Shop “I Love This Yarn” here: Hobby Lobby “I Love This Yarn”

These color palettes can help you create the ultimate summer project! Bags, scrunchies, pillows, wall hangers, and so much more!
